Plantations, forests, and wildlife
are what come to mind when Wayanad is mentioned. Situated in the midst of the
Western Ghats, it has a pleasant climate all year round. The history of Wayanad
is thought to date back to the New Stone Age. Documented evidence, however, is
available only from the 18th century onward. The region was under
the rule of the Pazhassi Rajas, Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan, and the British at
various times. In 1980, it was made an independent district of Kerala.
